The newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer has requested from Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar for collaborative efforts between the Maldives and India on issues of mutual interest and concern.

The new minister said via a post on X that he looks forward to collaborate with the Indian External Affairs Minister on "issues of mutual interest and concern." He added that efforts would be made to "recalibrate and advance the time-tested relationship" between the two countries.

While President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu took oath of office on Friday afternoon, November 17, his administration had come to power criticizing the outgoing administration's relations with India, asserting that they severely undermined the country's independence and sovereignty. One of the key commitments of the new government is the expulsion of Indian military personnel from the Maldives.

The newly sworn-in President also reiterated at an earlier event, that the top priority under his government's first 100 days would be to deport the Indian soldiers currently in the Maldives back home.

President Dr. Muizzu further assured that all controversial provisions in agreements made with foreign governments, which may be detrimental to the sovereignty of the Maldives, will be publicly disclosed and addressed.

Despite the commitment to repatriate Indian soldiers, President Muizzu has always maintained that these efforts would strictly adhere to official diplomatic channels and procedures, ensuring a peaceful process.
