The Parliament's Judiciary Committee approved last Thursday to dismiss Mohamed Mausoom, the Chief Magistrate of Haa Dhaalu Atoll judicial constituency.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) filed for Mausoom's termination last month over serious allegations involving bribery and sexual harassment against the magistrate, for which he also served a suspension.

During the sit-down held last week, the Judiciary Committee concluded that JSC had forwarded the case to the parliament in line with the commission's regulations and procedures.

Following the committee's decision, Mausoom's dismissal would be decided via a vote on the parliament floor.

Under the Maldivian Constitution, a two-thirds majority vote from the parliament is required to dismiss a sitting judge.

JSC is presently probing some cases involving judges of other courts as well. The commission had in the past terminated some justices over disciplinary violations.
