Protests erupted today in Baa atoll Thulhaadhoo, with demonstrators alleging that the council is acting contrary to a court order regarding the allocation of 100 housing units, deviating from the initial guidelines.

Protesters also entered the council office to voice their concerns.

An individual from the island told Mihaaru News that the court had mandated the council to allocate the housing units according to the original guidelines. However, the council has resisted complying with this order.

According to him, the council has stated that it will make a decision after consulting with the Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development.

Spokesperson for the protesters said that the council has refused to comply with the court’s decision and is seeking to appeal the order.

"The public is frustrated. The council is ignoring the guidelines and the court's ruling. The guidelines were misused, and now they are not even following the court's decision," the spokesperson said.

He expressed the public's concern that, despite the housing units being completed some time ago, they have yet to be allocated. The buildings are deteriorating, and residents remain uncertain about when they will be able to move in.

The council has yet to provide a comment on the situation.

The 100 housing unit project, awarded to a joint venture of Precision Engineering Services and Flexink Private Limited for MVR 79.6 million in July 2019, was completed and handed over to the council last year.
