Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Tuesday announced that 601 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Maldives, while 134 recovered from the disease.

This was the highest number of positive cases in the country within a 24 hour period, breaking the record of 585 cases recorded just a day earlier.

With this, the country has broken its own record for number of positive cases three days in a row.

HPA revealed that of the new cases, 440 were from the greater Male’ region, 141 cases from residential islands, 19 cases from operational resorts and one case from industrial islands.

Although the number of cases started to decline earlier in April, figures have been increasing at a worrying rate recently.

In order to control the new surge of cases. HPA announced that starting from Tuesday, May 4, travel between the islands will be restricted, with the exception of the greater Male' area. The restrictions are to be placed for one week.

Meanwhile, on May 3, the agency announced further restrictive measures including re-introducing vehicle ban from 0000hrs till 0400 hrs and closing off face-to-face clases

Currently, the island nation records a total of 31,931 virus cases of which 6,508 are active cases, in addition to 25,349 recoveries and 74 deaths.

Notably, this marks the first time the number of active cases surpassed 6000.

On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 154 million people and claimed over 3.22 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 132 million people have recovered.
