Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a Yellow Alert for heavy rainfall and strong winds across most regions of the country.

A Yellow Alert has been issued for the area from Laamu Atoll to Thaa Atoll, effective until 13:00 hrs today. While wind speeds in this region usually range from 25 to 30 miles per hour, gusts of up to 50 miles per hour are expected today.

Data from the Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) reveals that the strongest winds yesterday were recorded in Alif Dhaalu Atoll Maamigili, where gusts reached up to 49 mph. In Haa Dhaalu Atoll Hanimaadhoo, wind speeds peaked at 47 mph.

MET predicts above-normal rainfall in the northernmost and central regions of the country for August and September.

The intensification of the southwest monsoon has caused heavy rains across most parts of the country, leading to flooding in several cities and islands. In Malé City, five families have been relocated to temporary shelters due to the severe weather conditions.

In response, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has committed to providing aid to those impacted by the rains and has established a special task force to address the situation.
