The Parliament has passed the motion to advise President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to dismiss central bank Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Governor Ali Hashim.
In today's vote, 63 members of parliament voted in favour of advising dismissal, while 9 voted against.
The dismissal of Ali Hashim was proposed to parliament by Deputy Speaker and Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim.
Parliament's Public Accounts Committee gave the Governor the opportunity to be answerable to the claims on two different occasions. However, he was unable to attend the scheduled meetings citing ill health.
He, instead, sent a report to parliament stating that the country is currently on the brink of an economic crisis due to governments' failure to pay heed to advise and instructions from MMA and international financial institutes over the past years.
Hashim was appointed to the post of Governor on September 8, 2019 during Solih's administration. He earlier served as Minister of Finance from 2008 to 2010.
