40,000 flats to be built in Northern and Southern atolls of Maldives

The project proposed for investments by the government includes 30,000 housing units in RasMale', 20,000 housing units in the southernmost atolls, and 20,000 housing units in the northernmost atolls.

The government has initiated efforts to find investors to construct 40,000 housing units in the northernmost and southernmost atolls of Maldives.

Opportunities to invest in various projects and industries was opened during the Invest Maldives Forum held in Dubai yesterday.

Among the projects proposed was a government initiative to construct 70,000 housing units. This includes 30,000 housing units in RasMale', 20,000 housing units in the southernmost atolls, and 20,000 housing units in the northernmost atolls.

The southern atolls where the housing units are planned to be established in are Gaafu Alif, Gaafu Dhaalu, Fuvahmulah and Addu. The northernmost atolls that have been decided upon are Haa Alif, Haa Dhaalu and Shaviyani.

The government's plans are to construct 15 to 20 storey complexes with housing units and areas designated for businesses, as well as four storey housing units and three storey housing units.

This will include studio apartments, 2 bedroom apartments and 3 bedroom apartments. The government estimates that USD 85 to 100 per sqft will be spent in this project.

The government has said that this project can be undertaken via Concessional Financing Model or Contractor Financing Model.
