Maldives Marine Research Institute, Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture with support from the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) on Tuesday, hosted the 'Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) South Asia Sea Regional Workshop'.

The two-day workshop held at the Maldives Customs Building was inaugurated by minister for fisheries, Zaha Waheed.

A total of 25 participants attended the workshop, including 17 local participants, 7 foreign participants and a facilitator from the GCRMN. Participants included representatives of government institutions, NGOs and the private sector involved in coral reef monitoring work.

According to the Ministry, the workshop is part of a series of regional workshops organized by ICRI in preparation for the 2020 GCRMN Global Report on Coral Reef Status and Trends, planned for launching at the Oceans Conference in Palau in August 2020.

The 2020 report aims to build the capacity of governments to make relevant policies relating to the conservation and sustainable use of coral reefs globally.

The last report on the global status of coral reefs published in 2008, indicating a significant gap in our current understanding of the status and trends of the world's coral reefs.

Founded in 1994 by the governments of Australia, France, Japan, Jamaica, Philippines, Sweden, United Kingdom and the United States of America, ICRI is an "informal partnership between Nations and organizations which strive to preserve coral reefs and related ecosystems around the world”.
