State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced plans to install smart meters in all households across the islands it serves.
Managing Director Hussain Fahmy in a press conference held yesterday said that the installation of smart meters will begin next month.
He stated that the transition to smart meters is expected to be completed within the next three years. Fahmy also noted that work on the smart grid is nearing completion.
Fahmy said that the engines are managed through a dedicated digital system, which enables remote operations, including switching transformers on and off and conducting load calculations.
He said that smart grids have already been installed in all the islands and that the installation of smart meters will soon commence.
"A comprehensive solution is observed with the combination of the smart grid and smart meter," Fahmy said.
Fenaka Corporation, which provides electricity to all islands in the Maldives, has been installing and using smart meters for some time.
