The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has introduced a new guideline which makes it mandatory for ship owners to pay compensation for damages incurred to goods loaded on their vessels.

This new guideline will go into effect starting in May.

According to the guidelines, the owner of the ship or boat must be confident that the goods loaded on it can be transported safely to their destination.

It also requires the owner of the vessel to pay compensation if the goods being transported on it are damaged due to the negligence of the captain or the crew.

However, if the damages are incurred accidentally or without intent, the ship owner will not be held responsible.

Requirements to be fulfilled prior to loading vessels with goods:

- The owner of the goods must inform the captain or crew of the nature of the goods being transported.

- The name, address, and contact number of the owner of the goods and the name, address, and contact number of the person receiving the goods must be provided.

- The owner should also provide information about the property's nature, whether it is easily destroyed, and how it should be stored.

- If the owner of the property wishes, the captain of the vessel will be required to provide a document confirming the goods were loaded onto the vessel, and if it is found that the captain or crew violated anything mandated in the guidelines, they can be fined up to MVR 1,000 – 2,000.
