Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef submitted a resolution to the parliament on Wednesday, calling to mandate wearing life jackets while traveling at sea.

Adam Shareef, Leader of opposition People's National Congress (PNC)'s Parliamentary Group, stressed in his submission that accidents that occur due to lack of implementation of safety measures must be reduced and measures must be strengthened further.

This resolution was submitted following the tragic marine accident that resulted in the death of five locals last Thursday when a speedboat carrying 10 passengers from Nolhivaranfaru to Hanimaadhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll capsized off the coast of the latter island.

Shareef's resolution stated that lack of attention towards implementing safety measures and disregarding warnings and advise by authorities were resulting in tragedies which cost lives in addition to damaging vessels and goods.

Therefore, the resolution called for authorities to ensure that captains, crew members and passengers took the necessary precautions during their travels.

In addition, the resolution asked to adhere to the rules and regulations of Sea Transport Act, mandate the use of life jackets at sea and prohibiting traveling while a yellow alert is issued.
