Most instances of terrorism in the Maldives are driven by political agendas, declared Minister of Defence Adam Shareef late Sunday.
Speaking at the celebration of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)’s 125th anniversary, the defence minister stated that while terrorist attacks are low in number in the island nation, most of them were politically motivated.
“The history of the Maldives shows who the culprits were, why the attacks took place, and how they were committed.”
Minister Shareef said it is incumbent upon the military and armed forces to learn from history and plan ahead to defend the nation against such incidents that take place in the country now and in the future. Assuring that the military will always stand with the police force against criminal offences, the minister called on the armed forces to always be alert for politically motivated terrorist attacks.
He also stressed that the armed forces must not fall prey to the treachery of traitors and conspirators.
The minister called on the military to prioritise the nation and their national duty above selfish desires. Emphasising the necessity for MNDF to remain politically unbiased and maintain integrity, he called on them to be faithful to the religion of Islam, the Constitution of the Maldives and its lawfully elected government, and to protect and serve the nation and its people.
