The Maldives yesterday called on the United Nation's Security Council to reconsider the admission of Palestine as a full member state in line with the resolution "Admission of New Member States to the United Nations”, which was adopted by the General Assembly on Friday.

During the tenth Emergency Special Session, Maldives delivered a statement noting that the overwhelming support for the Resolution sent a strong message to the Security Council.

Maldives further called on United Nations member states to act with urgency to stop the ongoing suffering in Palestine, and make Israel comply with its obligations under international law and international humanitarian law.

The country also further emphasised that a comprehensive solution to the conflict in the Middle East can only be achieved with the recognition and establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The tenth Emergency Special Session was resumed on 10 May 2024 upon the request of the Chairs of the Arab Group, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Non-aligned Movement.

With this new resolution, Palestine will be granted new rights previously not extended, including the right to sit alongside other UN member states and the opportunity to be nominated to speak at all UN meetings.
