Minister of Education Dr Aishath Ali signed the Universal Declaration on Balanced and Inclusive Education on behalf of the Maldivian state, on Wednesday.
Delivering a speech after signing the declaration, Minister Aishath stated that Maldives has "taken huge steps towards the education of children with various diverse learning needs".
The government's political commitment, the nation's legal framework and the country's commitment for a more inclusive society will help to achieve the aims in the newly signed declaration, she said.
According to the minister, she signed the declaration with the hope of further strengthening the promotion of the rights of children with special education and those with various disabilities.
"I am confident that goal number four of SDG will be further enhanced by this declaration", she said. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) four aims to 'ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all'.
However, she noted that society will face evolving challenges and called for everyone to work hand in hand to reach the goals and "remain firm and committed for this noble cause".
