Institute for Global Success (IGS) on Sunday announced plans to launch the first space programme in Maldives.
The institute has signed an agreement with the United Kingdom (UK)'s KSF Space Foundation to implement training and scientific research projects on the designing, building and launching of spacecrafts.
Under the agreement, KSF Space will provide free aid for industry experts from the United States (US) to train Maldivian students pursuing higher studies.
According to IGS' Chairman and CEO Riffath Mohamed, the first research project under the space programme will be introduced early next year. Noting that experts have already conducted the technical and feasibility studies of the project, Riffath stated that IGS was presently finalising partners.
"The main objective of the space programme is to earn a good name for Maldives and realise the hopes of the youth", said Riffath during the event held to announce the programme,
"We want to see a day when Maldivian astronauts work in the space industry".
IGS is a local institute that strives to build the future leaders of the country. Earlier in October, IGS announced plans to launch the first asteroid discovery programme in Maldives. The Institute also marked the World Space Week for the first time in the country.
