Ministry of Education announced on Wednesday that schooling will resume for children enrolled in Nursery and Baby Nursery, along with other junior and senior grades, on the coming Sunday.

This is the first time classroom teaching would take place for young students since their closure in 2019 due to the ongoing global COVID19 pandemic.

Although the ministry previously publicised plans to begin classes for children in Lower Kindergarten (LKG) and above, this afternoon’s bulletin revealed the inclusion of Nursery and Baby Nursery as well, per the state’s academic calendar.

Following the outbreak, schools in Maldives' COVID-19 commenced teaching for grades nine to 12 in September last year, while online lessons were provided for students of lower grades.

Under the protocol rolled out by the ministry as protective measures to limit the spread of disease, overall sessions will be limited to 4 to 5 hours. Pre-Schoolers or foundation level students are required to attend five days for a minimum of two hours, of which 60 minutes shall be dedicated to checking body temperatures, washing hands and partaking in physical activity.

In March 2019, following the community spread of COVID19 in the capital city, schools in the Greater Male’ Region were closed indefinitely. Schools have not resumed official classroom teaching since, relying on online and broadcast methods to provide lessons to students in particular age groups.

Given the unprecedented changes brought about by the pandemic, educational have similarly revised teaching formats, choosing to begin classes according to the syllabus laid out for the second term of the previous year.

Hence, lessons intended for the first term of this year, or the actual first term of the academic calendar, will begin on August 10.
