One arrested in MVR 500,000 scam

Police have confirmed that a 23 year old male has been arrested in relation to this case.

An individual has been arrested in relation to the scam case where a person was cheated out of MVR 500,000 with the false promise of a flat.

In this case, the person was approached through a phone call and promised a flat. The scammers convinced the person to provide the One Time Password (OTP) for the bank transaction and proceeded to withdraw MVR 500,000.

Police have confirmed that a 23 year old male has been arrested in relation to this case.

The Criminal Court has remanded him in custody for 15 days while the investigation proceeds.

As the investigation is ongoing, further details have not been revealed.

Scam cases have been on the rise recently. Just days before this incident, a woman from Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll became a victim of a similar scam, where she lost MVR 200,000 to false claims of having received a flat. That case is also currently under investigation.
