People's National Congress (PNC) leader and President Elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appealed to members to be aware of not removing members from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) in their efforts to increase membership of PNC.
Muizzu made the appeal in a whatsapp group of PPM/PNC senate members, responding to a member sharing an article with former President Abdulla Yameen's comments on the membership drive.
Yameen has recently been granted leniency to leave the house for medical and other necessary purposes after notifying Maldives Correctional Services. He is currently under house arrest, having been transferred last month from prison where he was serving a 11 year sentence on a conviction on money laundering.
Upon being given the leeway, Yameen attended a meeting at the PPM offices on Sunday evening, where he expressed concerns that PPM members are filling membership forms for PNC and called on the members to desist from doing so.
In the whatsapp group, Muizzu responded by appealing to members to assist in gaining 10,000 members to PNC.
"I reiterate that when conducting this membership drive, you must ensure that you are not taking away members from PPM," he said in the group in which Yameen is also present in.
While multiple members in the group expressed support for Muizzu's statement in the group, Yameen did not respond in any form.
Muizzu's aim is to increase PNC membership by 10,000 in these three months, and is actively working towards achieving that goal.
He has expressed his wishes for PPM and PNC to work collaboratively to win a majority in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Yameen, too, speaking at a gathering of PPM members on Monday night, appealed for PPM/PNC to work together in the parliamentary elections.
