Minister of Environment Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan, on Monday, participated at the ongoing 2019 Asia-Pacific Regional High-Level Forum held in Bangkok, Thailand
In a statement given during the forum, the minister stated that no country is free from the negative impacts of climate change and that small island nations such as Maldives, face the highest risk of inadvertent damages from the climate crisis.
Highlighting transitional efforts by the country, the minister stated that efforts are underway to power 70 percent of the "peak load" electricity via renewable energy sources.
Moreover, he declared the need to reform current policies towards an environmentally friendly, green economy.
Additionally, Dr Hussain said that all countries must ratify and implement the Paris (Climate) Agreement to curb worsening natural disasters due to climate change.
The agreement's goal is to keep increases in the average global temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with further targets to limit temperature increase to 1.5 degrees celsius, which scientists claim would considerably reduce the effects of climate change.
The three-day forum will promote successful green economy solutions based on the countries in order to implement the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The forum is organized by the World Green Economy Organization in cooperation with the UN Office for South-South Cooperation and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.
