A tourist couple celebrating their honeymoon in Dusit Thani Maldives resort in Baa Atoll are being hailed as heroes after saving a drowning resort employee who fell into the sea from the deck of a water villa.

The incident took place a week ago on the 28th of April, when Jordan Daniel Van Dyk and Daniel De Bruyne witnessed the employee fall and drown. They immediately jumped into the water to rescue the resort staff member who has not been identified.

"The staff member was in a state of distress, struggling in the water. Despite the challenging circumstances, Mr. Van Dyk and Ms. De Bryun acted swiftly and courageously coming to the aid of the staff member," Baa Atoll Police wrote in a statement on Facebook.

In honour of the couple, Baa Atoll Police awarded them with a plaque of appreciation for their bravery. It was the courage and rapid response they demonstrated that prevented a tragic outcome, said the Police.

"Therefore, I would like to thank the couple on behalf of the people and the police service. Their quick thinking saved a life today," wrote Baa Atoll Police in a Facebook post.

The station also thanked the management of Dusit Thani Maldives resort for their assistance and support in coordinating the rescue.
