Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid on Monday signed the Statute of the OIC Women’s Development Organisation, a new body established under the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to promote the role and empowerment of women within its member states.
The minister signed the statute during his official visit to Saudi Arabia, on the sidelines of the Opening Ceremony of the Commemoration of the OIC’s Golden Jubilee.
The Maldives thus became the 13th state to sign and ratify the statute. The parliament approved Maldives’ application for membership last September.
The minister, who arrived in Jeddah early Monday, also called on OIC's Secretary General Dr Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen, at the OIC General Secretariat.
According to the foreign ministry, the two diplomats discussed ways to expand Maldives' contribution to the deliberations within the OIC. The Secretary General also welcomed the Maldivian government's decision to open a consulate in Jeddah.
Maldives joined the OIC in 1976, and the organisation remains one of the principle international bodies in which the archipelago actively continues to participate. This year, Minister Shahid attended the 46th Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Abu Dhabi in March, while President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih attended the 14th Islamic Summit in May.
