Qasim demands justice for Yameen, slams government's actions

Jumhooree Party leader, Qasim Ibrahim has criticised the government as has expressed his belief that Yameen should receive a fair trial.

In a tweet, Qasim highlighted that one of the key objectives of introducing a new constitution was to guarantee fundamental rights and freedoms for all citizens by establishing a justice system that is free and fair.

The tweet further stated, "therefore, every Maldivian citizen should be entitled to their full rights, irrespective of whether it is President Yameen or any other individual. The right to a fair trial is a fundamental right enshrined in our constitution. It is a basic human right."

Qasim, who has already announced his intention to run in the presidential elections, stressed the importance of administering justice without undue delay.

The appeal hearing holds significant importance for Yameen, as his eligibility to participate in the presidential elections relies on overturning his current prison sentence. Consequently, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has been actively advocating for the trial to be expedited to ensure that Yameen's candidacy can be submitted on time for the presidential election.

As per the constitution, a sentence of 12 months or more for a criminal offense acts as a barrier for individuals who intend to run in presidential election. The current deadline for nominating candidates is set for the August 7.

Qasim held a meeting with senior leaders of PPM yesterday. While PPM revealed that the meeting took place based on instructions from Yameen, no further information regarding the specifics of the meeting has been disclosed.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih extended an invitation to the Jumhooree Party to form a coalition for his second term election bid. However, Jumhooree Party has made the decision to contest separately in the upcoming elections.

The Jumhooree Party also engaged in discussions with The Democrats. These talks, initiated by former President Nasheed, appear to be currently on hold.

The Democrats and the PPM are also engaging in discussions regarding the possibility of collaborating and working together for the upcoming elections.
