The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has said that it will reopen the asphalt-laid parts of Ameenee Magu this week.

The ministry said that the asphalt work would be completed up to Imaduddin School before Ramadan.

The Minister of State for the Planning Ministry, Akram Kamaluddin, told Mihaaru News that the project contractors were now drawing traffic signs on the asphalt-laid part of the road. The work will be concluded within the week, he added.

Asphalt work has been completed so far from the most eastern point of Ameenee Magu, where it meets Boduthakurufaanu Magu, all the way to State Electric Company Limited (STELCO).

The Ministry first contracted the road redevelopment project to Malé City Council. It was then contracted to the Road Development Corporation (RDC); however, due to the pace of the work, it was then subcontracted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

It has been more than a week since MTCC finished laying asphalt on the road, but the fact that they still have not reopened the part of the road that is complete has been criticised because it is inconvenient for the public. The road was closed off sometime in mid-2022 to carry out the project.

Akram addressed the delays, saying that the ministry and contractors ran into problems they had not expected at different stages of the project.

The government launched the MVR 80 million initiative in July 2022 and set a deadline of 10 months to finish the whole project.

The ministry now estimates that the project will likely conclude by September 27, 2023.
