Kudagiri Picnic island initially scheduled for a grand opening on July 27, has been postponed indefinitely.

The State Minister of Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (MNPHI) Akram Kamaluddeen, while speaking with Mihaaru news had confirmed pushing back the opening day owing to several unfinished components in the island.

Parts of the incomplete components include landscaping works and completion of a few in-land facilities for picnic-goers.

A designated picnic venue was a major campaign pledge of the current presidential administration. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had earlier pledged on commencing the project within 100 days of taking oath of office.

Government had earlier contracted Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to develop the picnic island on the Kudagiri lagoon situated 10.5 kilometers from Male' City, for a project total of MVR 41 million.

MTCC had managed to complete majority of the project under eight months from initial commencement date.

With a few notable aspects of the project still remaining in progress, the MNPHI State Minister had attested on pushing the official opening until all project elements have been fully completed.

Despite confirmation of postponing the scheduled opening date, Kamaluddeen did not disclose when the island will be open for visitors.

Various State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) have already commenced tree-planting initiatives in the island ahead of the unveiling, while Maldives Vice President Faisal Naseem had inspected progress.
