Prosecutor General's Office on Thursday indicted a 30-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting three elderly women.
The PG Office levied charges on one of the three cases against Mohamed Simhan of Meedhoo, Seenu Atoll, at the island's magistrate court.
The charges include trespassing, assault, and attempted sexual assault.
The first incident, involving the attempted rape of a 64-year-old woman, was reported to the police at approximately 1035 hours on May 28. Following his arrest on May 29, authorities discovered that the man had sexually assaulted two other women, aged 66 and 65, on the same day.
The Meedhoo Magistrate Court had placed Simhan under house arrest after his initial remand expired on June 16.
In the wake of public outcry at the decision, the PG Office ordered the police to rearrest Simhan and detain him at a facility designated by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday.
