An organisation by the name of Addu Thalassaemia Society was inaugurated on October 24.

Vice-Chairperson of Thalassaemia Society of Maldives, Fathimath Jeehan Saleem, was the special guest at the inauguration ceremony held in Maradhoo.

President of Addu's Thalassaemia Society Ahmed Shareef stated that the organisation's operations will take place in collaboration with National Thalassaemia Centre (NTC) and Thalassaemia Society of Maldives.

According to Shareef, the organisation aims to raise awareness about thalassaemia and work towards a better future for those suffering from the disease.

In order to work towards this goal, the organisation signed an agreement with Addu Medicity Clinic located in Feydhoo.

Under this agreement, a special unit will be established in the clinic for thalassaemia patients. The clinic will also facilitate medical examinations to be done via well-developed hospitals in Maldives as well as foreign health care service providers.

Medicity Clinic will further provide consultation services, and aid in transferring patients to Hithadhoo Regional Hospital for blood transfusions.

"Overall, Medicity will play a major role in all our efforts", Shareef said.

Shareef added that the organisation will attempt to compile a registry of all thalassaemia patients since proper records of patients were never maintained.

"One other notable problem is the lack of medical personnel with the proper knowledge and training regarding thalassaemia. Due to this, there is a challenge in raising awareness about the issue", Shareef said, adding that the organisation will work closely with Thalassaemia Centre to resolve this complication.

In addition to raising awareness about the disease, Shareef highlighted the importance of raising awareness on blood donation as well.

Shareef further assured that the organisation will not only focus on thalassaemia or patients suffering from the disease alone.

"We will work for the betterment of the health sector as a whole", he assured.
