A sewerage pump station operated by state utilities firm, Fenaka Corporation, in Hithadhoo island of Addu City was set ablaze on Tuesday.

Maldives Police Service stated they received reports of the fire around 1700 hrs. The blaze was extinguished and no one was hurt in the incident, they said.

Addu City Council's Mayor Abdulla Sodiq alleged in a tweet that the fire was arson and it was an attempt to halt services in the island. He called on Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed to take strict action against the perpetrators.

Police declined to comment whether arson was involved as the investigation is underway. No arrests have been made yet.

There have been a number of arson cases recently in Maldives. Police have stated that the arsonists were targeting government property. A major incident involved the burning of five speedboats and two dinghies docked at Mahibadhoo, Alif Dhaalu Atoll. The speedboats included a sea ambulance, a police speedboat and another belonging to Alif Dhaal Atoll Council.
