Individuals to be granted free Hajj trips to be selected randomly through a draw

A press release by the Islamic Ministry following the publicization of the policy to send underprivileged Maldivians to Hajj revealed that 50 individuals recorded in the register for poor and needy will be sent to Hajj this year.

Under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vow to send 1000 underprivileged Maldivians to Hajj in the next five years, the rule has been determined to select these individuals through a lottery between people registered as poor and needy.

Islamic Ministry has disclosed the policies dictating the procedures, guidelines and standards for sending underprivileged people to Hajj under the State’s expense on the gazette today.

Under this policy, five conditions for the selection of these underprivileged individuals were stated. The policy outlines the requirements of having been recorded in the register of the poor and needy, fitting the age criteria of the announcement, never before having performed Hajj, having a good state of health that allows performance of Hajj and being under 69 years old before the selection.

The Ministry has informed that each person is allowed one slot under this policy.

A press release by the Islamic Ministry following the publicization of the policy to send underprivileged Maldivian to Hajj revealed that 50 individuals recorded in the register for poor and needy will be sent to Hajj this year.

“Under this scheme, the individuals sent to Hajj will be determined through a public draw held among poor and needy people recorded in the register compiled by the Ministry, who pass the mandated requirement of the policy.” The statement says.

The Ministry stated that individuals selected under this scheme will be sent to Hajj under the charge of the Maldives Hajj Corporation and their quota will be arranged from the Hajj quota reserved for the Ministry’s use.

The government had previously revealed their intention to send individuals between the ages 50-69 to Hajj in the first three years and individuals aged 45-69 in the last two years of the current government’s tenure.

Both travel expenses and Male' City stay of the individuals taken to Hajj are covered by the State.

The cabinet has decided to arrange expense funding for these 50 individuals this year using the Zakat fund. Negotiations have commenced on the use the State budget and sponsorships for this scheme in the upcoming years.
