Former Chief Executive Officer of MTCC Adam Azim has on Thursday submitted his candidacy form to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to participate in the party's primaries to win the ticket for the mayoral election. MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail received Azim's form. After handing in his form, Azim made some remarks regarding his decision to run for mayor. He stated that Male' residents are facing multiple difficulties with life in the city, including the poor maintenance and hygiene of the roads. Azim stated that he would run for the mayoral seat with the intention of finding solutions for these multiple issues. He pledged to provide solutions for existing problems, and to build Male' into the kind of place that residents would be happy to live in. Applications for MDP's mayoral primaries are scheduled to close at 4 PM today. However, the party has not yet announced the date of the primary itself. As of Thursday, Azim alone had submitted a candidacy form for the ticket. Outside of MDP, a number of other people have expressed interest in running for the mayoral position. This includes former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor, former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed, former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof and City Councilor Mohamed Saif Fathih. The Elections Commission has previously announced that the by-elections for the mayoral position will be held on January 13, 2024.
