President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has agreed to form a coalition government with the Adhaalath Party and the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA).

The details of the agreement would be revealed soon, Presidet Solih said.

The President, on Tuesday, held discussions with the Adhaalath Party's Leader and Imran Abdullah, and MDA's Founder and Leader Ahmed Siyam Mohamed, at the official residence of the President, Muliaage.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, the President reiterated the importance of involving all coalition partners throughout all stages of the coalition-building process.

The coalition parties will have members at all levels of government besides the cabinet, he said.

The current coalition partners' share in the ruling government:

- Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP): 40%

- Jumhooree Party: 25%

- Maldives Reform Movement (MRM): 20%

- Adhaalath Party: 15%

According to the 2018 coalition agreement, which was signed prior to the presidential elections, the coalition partners must run jointly in elections to contest for government posts, parliamentary and local body elections.

However, in the 2019 parliamentary elections, MDP ran for all the seats in parliament. All parties involved in the coalition contested separately in the subsequent council elections.
