The Maldives Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has raised concerns over the increase of waste on the roads ahead of Ramadan.

The agency said that several residences and public venues have been cleaning up in preparation for the Islamic holy month, and as a result, trash has been left on the streets of Malé.

Discarding the waste on the roads and pavements will create difficulties and expose the public to health risks, the EPA added.

The agency urged the public to avoid contaminating the roads, buildings, and public areas, saying, "We advise making arrangements with the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) prior to cleaning up residences and buildings."

According to the Waste Management Regulation, discarding waste at any venue without the EPA’s permission is a liable offense.
