United Nations (UN) report the global population has reached 8 billion.

The World Population Prospects 2022 published by UN's Population Division reported that the global population will reach 8 billion by November 15, 2022.

Director of the Population Division of the United Nations, John Wilmoth remarked that though this was an improvement for mankind, it brings with it potential challenges for the future.

According to the Prospects, the two most populous regions in 2022 were both in Asia; Eastern and South-Eastern Asia with 2.3 billion people - which is 29 percent of the global population - and Central and Southern Asia with 2.1 billion people - which is 26 percent of the global population.

China and India with over 1.4 billion people, accounted for the highest percentage of the population in these regions. Population increased in Asia by 700 million people since 2011.

While India's population has increased by 180 million, the UN predict that during 2023 the country's population will surpass that of China, the world's most populous country.

Population growth in China has slowed down in light of the country's "One Child Policy", reports UN. Child birth rates are lowest in USA, Japan and European countries.

UN notes that this population growth is reflective of the improvement of the health sector and availability of clean and nutritious food. Fertility rates were reported comparatively higher in economically straddled countries as well; especially in Africa.

The latest projections by the UN suggest global population could grow around 8.5 billion in 2030, and then increase to 9.7 billion in 2050. The UN Population Division further projected that the global population could increase to 10.4 billion by 2100.
