Male' Garage Fire; 10th deceased victim identified

Local authorities confirm the previously unidentified tenth deceased victim at Maafannu Senrose (west-block) fire last Thursday, has been identified.

One of the deadliest fires in recent history, and the most dangerous in terms of lives claimed, the blaze killed ten expatriates.

While authorities earlier confirmed the victims included seven Indians and two Bangladeshis. The tenth was not identified owing to extreme burns.

Local authorities however, have now confirmed the victim was an Indian national, bringing the death toll of Indian expats to eight. Apart from confirming the victim's nationality, authorities have not disclosed any further details.

Meanwhile, local authorities note the details of the victims have been shared with Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant embassies.

Earlier, Maldives government confirmed repatriation of the victims by their family members will be facilitated through relevant embassies and missions, as well as assistance from Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ministry has since confirmed it is working with the relevant bodies to ensure the victims are transported back to their home countries.

While one of the deceased victims had been charred beyond recognition, authorities confirmed another victim, still alive but in critical condition, was transferred to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) for medical treatment.

The victim, yet not identified, is receiving treatment at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.
