Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure on Monday deferred rent payments for government-leased flats for an additional three months.

The ministry initially announced a 6-month rent deferment, for flats in the Greater Male' area and other islands, in March to ease the financial burdens of tenants over the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the initial deferment's deadline on August 31, 2020, the housing ministry announced in a notice on the government gazette, that rent payments will be further extended from September until the end of November as per multiple requests received.

However, tenants are to pay maintenance fees during this three-month period.

The extension will also be added to their lease agreements, the ministry further noted.

Tenants are to apply for the extended rent deferment via email at [email protected], including submissions of their National ID copies and lease agreement numbers.

Applications will close on October 15, 2020, at 1300 hrs.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the government has deferred rent and lease payments for islands and land leased for tourism and agriculture as well, while banks have also announced various loan moratoriums.
