HPA urges caution over mosquito-borne diseases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Tuesday warned of a possible surge in mosquito-borne diseases as a result of frequent rain showers and urged the public to take precautionary measures.

HPA particularly highlighted that the total 4,141 reported Dengue cases represented an increase compared to 2018. However, the agency noted that the number of cases fell from 466 in August to 317 in September.

Similarly, the incidence of Chikungunya decreased from 39 cases in August to 38 in September. So far, HPA revealed that a total of 1,454 Chikungunya cases were diagnosed in 2019.

Furthermore, HPA called on the public to consistently take precautions against Diarrhoea and the common cold despite the lower number of cases compared to 2018 as well as decreases between the last two months.

The total number of diagnosed cases of Diarrhoea and the common cold in 2019 have reached 37,523 and 187,222 respectively.

Statistics concerning hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) revealed that the number of reported cases increased between August and September, despite an overall decrease compared to 2018. While 123 cases of HFMD were diagnosed in August, 241 cases were recorded the following month.

Overall, HPA urged citizens to prioritize sanitation and limit contact with infected individuals to curb the spread of the aforementioned diseases, while also encouraging proper treatment.
