Abdulla Rafeeq, widely known and respected for his industrious services to Fuvahmulah City, has passed away on Sunday.

Rafeeq, at 93 years of age, passed away while receiving treatment in Cochin, India.

He leaves behind seven sons, including former Minister and current owner of Rainbow Enterprises Ibrahim Rafeeq, Fuvahmulah City Mayor Ismail Rafeeq, and former Editor of 'Haveeru' Dr Ali Rafeeq.

Rafeeq was also the elder brother of former Haveeru Chairman Dr Mohamed Zahir Hussain.

Former Island Chief of Fuvahmulah Mohamed Waheed shared some memories of Rafeeq.

He said that Rafeeq had completed his education at Majeedhiya School in Male' and returned to Fuvahmulah in 1952.

He then worked in the Atoll Office, following which he continued to serve the the island in different capacities.

After returning to Fuvahmulah, Rafeeq first worked as a teacher. He taught sports to children, going on to become Fuvahmulah School's first ever Football Coach.

Since then, he explored many other areas of interest, prominent among which is agricultural work, which he had a passion for even into the latter years of his life.

Waheed also reiterated that Rafeeq was always widely looked up to and respected by the Fuvahmulah community.

"Everyone alike respected Rafeeq. He lived through his own, independent work. Every now and then, he engaged in agricultural work as well," he said.

In 2019, Rafeeq had given an interview to The Edition where he spoke about his fulfilling life in Fuvahmulah, his love for his family and his many areas of work.

Over the years, Rafeeq had worked in the Atoll Office, teaching, fishing, agriculture, seafaring and other areas of interest.

Rafeeq spoke fondly then of his life of peace and contentment with his wife of over six decades, his seven children, and twenty two grandchildren.
