Naeema's murderers are believed to have acted on the motive of seeking revenge against her, as they believed she practiced black magic. However, no evidence has been found to support this claim.
Maldives Police revealed yesterday that although Naeema Moosa's murderers took her life under the suspicion that she practiced black magic, authorities have found no evidence to support this claim.
Naeema, 62, a resident of Noonu atoll Manadhoo, was found brutally murdered in her own home in April of 2023, and since then, three people from the island have been charged with her murder. They are Abdul Wahid Rifaas, Ahuzam Abdul Shukoor and Hussain Fawaz.
The official charges detail that they are accused of intentional murder using a sharp weapon, obstruction of justice, and abuse of a corpse.
Upon receiving news of Naeema's death, some islanders suggested that the motive could have been revenge for her alleged involvement in black magic.
However, in a press conference held at Iskandharu Koshi yesterday, Inspector of Police Mohamed Saamih, Head of the Death and Homicide Investigation Unit, stated that by the end of the investigation, they found no evidence to suggest Naeema practiced black magic, other than rumors circulating within the island.
"Investigations have not found that Naeema Moosa practiced black magic, and we have found no evidence to suggest that. However, the motive remains the same. [The murder] is something they did because they believed she practiced black magic," he said.
Naeema's body was found in her home with injuries to the neck and various parts of the body two days after she was last seen, following concerns from people who reported her missing.
At the time of her death, she was a sweeper at the Manadhoo island council office.
