Police have apprehended theives who threatened and robbed foreigners in Malé City.
Maldives Police Service has arrested two local men in Malé City for robbing foreigners and threatening to cut off their fingers if the victims refused to hand over money.
The agency said that they are now investigating a case in which foreigners were robbed at knife-point in Rasfannu under threat of cutting their fingers off for refusal to comply.
The two men arrested are:
- Ahmed Sivath (37) - Hithadhoo, Addu City
- Mohamed Salim (37) - Hithadhoo, Addu City
Police confirmed that the money robbed by the duo has also been recovered.
Late last night, Police also arrested a Maldivian man who robbed a mobile phone off a foreigner on Chaandhanee Magu. Ahmed Nizar (31) from Laamu atoll's Maamendhoo island was arrested in that case.
Police said the man was caught and handed over to them by members of the public. They detailed that officers arrived on scene after receiving a report of the robber being detained by people on scene and that they took custody of the suspect from there.
"With the help of the public, the man was arrested and the phone was handed over to the owner," police said.
