Maldives Transport and Contracting Company’s (MTCC) CEO Adam Azim said over 19,000 people commute using the bus lines established between Male’ and Hulhumale’ daily.
Replying to a Facebook post made by Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Director General Ibrahim Naeem made regarding the import of double-decker buses by MTCC, Azim had said last week that 50 buses were needed to facilitate the passengers between Hulhumale' and Male’.
He had said while over 19,000 people use the bus daily, they are completely full during peak hours.
Naeem had made the post while a string of accidents had occurred recently, resulting in one death as well. However, he had later deleted his statement.
Azim had said if smaller buses were brought, approximately 200 buses would be needed to ensure that all passengers reach their destinations on time.
“Which way is better? Fifty buses on the roads, or 200 buses on the roads?” Azim had questioned.
MTCC had recently added 15 buses to their fleet of buses to the Male’-Hulhumale’ Phase Two line.
A double-decker bus can carry up to 80 passengers at a time.
Double-decker buses were first brought to Maldives in 2018, with the establishment of the Male’-Hulhumale’ bridge. Twenty two buses were imported during that time.
