Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Aishath Nahula declared Sunday that incidence of accidents significantly declined after the imposition of government-mandated helmets for motorcyclists travelling across the Sinamale' Bridge.
Speaking at a press briefing, the minister stated that in addition to the statistics, the new regulation also drastically lowered the fatality of any accidents that occurred since.
She further shared that the ministry planned to conduct special awareness programmes to familiarise school children and the youth with traffic laws and regulations.
An alarming number of accidents and severe injuries were recorded on the Sinamale' Bridge and its adjoining highway, after the bridge opened on September 7, 2018. The government mandated helmets for motorcyclists on March 10 this year.
