The project to expand and tar the roads of capital Male that would connect to the landmark bridge being developed between Male and airport island Hulhule, has commenced, announced Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday.
According to the housing ministry, Male's ring road of Boduthakurufaanu Magu is to be expanded from its current two lanes to four lanes, on the capital's eastern coast up to Hulhumale ferry terminal, and on the southern coast up to the Industrial Village.
The expanded road would measure 16 metres in width and serve to minimise inbound and outbound traffic of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge.

In a tweet, Dr. Muizzu revealed that the road construction project was undertaken by the bridge's contractor, CCCC Second Harbour Engineering Company. He further declared that the project was estimated to reach completion by July 26, the Independence Day of the Maldives which is when the government plans to unveil the bridge.
The housing ministry had further said that the expanded areas of the ring road would feature pavements of two-metres, and roadside trees.
The current stage of bridge construction is the placing of the superstructure to connect the bridge's pillars. According to the ministry, this development has been completed at the Male end. The next stage would be to develop and finish the lanes of the bridge.
One of the most ambitious infrastructural projects undertaken by the current administration, the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge development costs USD 200 million, out of which USD 116 million was provided as free aid and USD 72 million as a loan by China. The Maldivian government is bearing USD 12 million of the project cost.
