Male' City Council on Sunday, awarded a streetscaping project to Road Development Corporation (RDC).

During the signing ceremony, it was revealed that the project would have an estimated cost of MVR 462 million. For the project, 18 kilometres of roadway and pavement on 416 roads are to be renovated, in addition to 21 new parking spaces.

The agreement was signed by Male' City Mayor Shifa Mohamed and RDC Managing Director Moosa Ali Manik. High-level government officials were in attendance at the event.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Shifa noted the project's first phase would cost roughly MVR 50.9 million. The first phase involves the redevelopment of the western ring road of the capital city and is scheduled to commence by Thursday.

Mayor Shifa highlighted the issue with roads as the largest problem faced by pedestrians, adding that residents of Male' will find relief as a result of the project.

Furthermore, she declared that the streetscaping project would solve the issue of flooding. Shifa also shed light on the council's intention to introduce public transportation within the city and provide bus services to students.

RDC is set to develop four types of roads, including arterial, city, secondary and neighbourhood pedestrian roads.

RDC’s mandate is to facilitate the building of high-quality roads across Maldives, in order to increase their connectivity. Overseeing such projects and creating a framework to maintain roads are also part of the company's mandate.

Mayor Shifa, Deputy Mayor Shamau Shareef and Council Member Ahmed Niyaz are contesting for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s electoral ticket in the primary runoffs scheduled for January 31.
