Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised the public over the reports of recent breakout of a new Covid-variant in several countries.
In the statement, HPA said that the current period coincides with academic holidays, reflecting increased travel abroad, as well as the scheduled return trips of Umrah pilgrims. These factors are expected to contribute to an increase in cases of viral fever and cold.
Several countries have already reported the discovery of the new JN.1 variant in December. In its statement, HPA did not specify the variant by its name or mention its discovery in other countries.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that the fast-spreading variant has already been discovered in 40 countries.
- Covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing especially after contracting fever or cold
- Practice general hygiene measures, including the use of soap or sanitizers when washing hands
- Wear masks if cold or fever leads to frequent coughing
- Reduce outdoor activities or frequenting public venues if contracted with cold or coughing, and avoid taking children to such public venues
- Limit the number of accompanying individuals to only those necessary when attending the hospital for consultation. Elderly citizens, children, and pregnant women should avoid visiting the hospital unless absolutely necessary
- Seek doctor's consultation if the cold or fever appears chronic
- Increase fluid intake
- Proper Rest
- Usage of tea, ginger- or honey-added drinks
In addition, HPA has further advised taking precautionary measures against mosquito bites by eliminating any environment where mosquitoes may breed. The agency also recommended using a wide variety of food and ensuring the hygiene of the consumed food.
