A rare breed of Heron, almost never sighted from South Asian region was recently discovered from the Maldives.

According to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the rare breed of bird resembles closely to that of local Herons.

The bird was first sighted from Laamu atoll Hithadhoo on 20th February.

EPA on its official Twitter handle identified the bird as a White Stork (Ciconia ciconia), adding that this was "possibly the first recorded sighting of this species in the Maldives."

The White Stork is a rarely seen birth in this region, and EPA adds that the bird is usually sighted during the Winter season and "vagrantly sighted in Sri Lanka" as well.

The White Stork is a well known bird with populations throughout the Europe, North America and the Middle East.

Moreover, EPA tweeted that the stork populations have decreased from "what is used to be" while most of the larger populations of the bird are now sighted in Spain, Poland and the Baltic region.
