Supreme Court Judge Abdulla Didi, on Monday, requested the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to ensure that the ongoing investigation against him was open to the public and local media outlets.
Judge Didi lodged his request when he presented himself at JSC as per the commission's summons. The judicial watchdog collected his statements regarding two ongoing investigations.
Speaking to local media outlet Mihaaru, JSC Director Hassan Zaheen revealed that commission members had agreed to conduct an open investigation as requested by Judge Didi. However, he said that the arrangement could only be finalised at an official JSC meeting, and assured that a decision would be reached shortly.
The judge's lawyer Adam Asif stated that JSC's investigative committee decided to postpone the probe until an official decision was made.
JSC ordered the suspension of Judge Abdulla Didi on June 12 citing an ongoing police investigation. However, the Supreme Court issued a stay order on JSC's suspension the following day.
The commission subsequently rejected the court's stay order and maintained that the suspension was in effect. In response, the Supreme Court issued an order nullifying any and all actions taken by the commission or other state institutions which disregarded the stay order.
Judge Didi continues to formally attend duties at the court while under suspension, prompting JSC to summon him for questioning on Monday night.
Asif assured that Judge Didi would offer full cooperation to JSC concerning the investigation. The lawyer also stated that the investigative committee ordered the judge to notify the commission if he was leaving capital city Male' due to the likelihood of additional summons.
The judicial watchdog assembled a special committee to probe two cases concerning Didi. The first is an enquiry into issues of conduct regarding the case under investigation by the Police. The second case concerns the issue of Judge Didi attending to his duties at the Supreme Court while under suspension.
