An investigation has commenced into allegations that some Immigration officers are conducting expatriate related work by accepting bribes.
Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan stated in a post on social media platform X last night that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has instructed for the strictest action to be taken against those in uniformed institutions who compromise trust in the institution and commit acts that disgrace the uniform.
He said that information had been received that five Immigration officers were acting against laws and regulations in conducting some work related to expatriate workers, and providing illicit enrichment to some. Upon receiving this information, an investigation has now been commenced through Police, he said.
No action has been taken against the officers yet as the investigation has only just commenced, the Minister told Mihaaru News.
However, electronic devices used by the officers have been seized, and searches have been conducted at their residences.
Ihusan said that further information will be revealed by Police and related authorities as the investigation proceeds.
He reiterated that this administration has a zero tolerance policy towards acts of this kind. In an operation last June, Police also arrested 18 prison officers for smuggling contraband into Maafushi prison.
