The Bar Council's Executive Committee has nine members at present. These are the Attorney General, President and Vice President elected from amongst lawyers, and an additional six members.
Ruling People's National Congress (PNC) MP for North Hulhumale' Hussain Shareef proposed an amendment to the Legal Profession Act to remove the AG from this committee. Ensuring the absolute independence of the Bar Council is stated as a reason for submitting the amendment.
In today's debate in Parliament on this matter, Gasim said that he endorses everything else in the bill besides the removal of the Attorney General.
He stated that it is unacceptable to consider the inclusion or exclusion of the Attorney General as something that would result in the Bar Council's actions being wrongful.
Gasim further asserted that the President should be regularly updated on matters concerning the running of the State.
"The Attorney General voting wrong in the Bar Council won't bring work to a halt. As per the law, things can proceed if they gain a majority," Gasim said.
Gasim stated that letting go of powers is not the way to resolve an issue. He said that for reform, what is needed is good intentions, adding that he hopes President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, too, works with this policy.
Gasim endorsed the article in the bill which states the Bar Council must provide attestation of documents issued by registered educational institutes.
The bill also states that official documents issued to citizens must be attested by diplomatic missions in foreign countries in the instance they are to be used in the relative foreign country.
