Parliament has placed on tomorrow's agenda the motion on advising President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to dismiss central bank Maldives Monetary Authority Governor Ali Hashim from his position.

The motion to advise the President to remove the governor from his position was submitted to Parliament by Deputy Speaker and MP for Dhiggaru Ahmed Nazim.

Submitting the motion, Nazim said that at this time when the country's economy is facing difficulties, MMA has failed to fulfill the obligations as defined in the MMA Act, adding that the monetary policy had also not been implemented as it should have been.

Parliament's Public Accounts Committee researched and deliberated on the matter, and, on two different occasions, gave the opportunity to Governor Hashim to be answerable to the claims. However, Hashim failed to attend the committee meetings citing ill health.

In the Parliament's General Purpose Committee meeting held at 20:30 hrs tonight, the eight members in attendance unanimously voted to hold a one hour debate on the matter in tomorrow's parliament sitting.

Hashim previously sent a report to parliament, in which he claimed that Maldives is currently facing a risk of an economic crisis due to failure on the part of governments to pay heed to the advice and instructions provided by MMA and foreign financial institutions in the past years.

He assured that he is continuing to work to prevent Maldives from falling into severe economic stress and to direct it towards safer ground even in the instance that the country does have to face an economic crisis.
