Niyama Private Islands, located in Dhaalu Atoll, was placed under monitoring status on Wednesday by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) after seven individuals tested positive for COVID19 amid the ongoing global pandemic.
During the Health Emergency Operations Centre's regular press briefing held last night, spokesperson Dr Nazla Rafeeq revealed that three employees and two tourists at the resort underwent testing after they began exhibiting COVID-like symptoms.
The additional two individuals found positive for the virus were tested because they were in direct contact with one or more of the five persons initially suspected of infection.
Dr Nazla stated that a total of 17 samples were sent from Niyama Resort for testing, adding that the resort's management planned to conduct random testing throughout the island on Thursday, in collaboration with Dhaalu Atoll Hospital.
Over the last 24 hours, 15 people were found positive for COVID19 in tourist resorts. According to the latest statistics published by HPA, there are 68 COVID-positive individuals currently residing in various such properties.
