Presidential candidate for the opposition coalition, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu), has pledged to abolish the MVR 50,000 fee required to register and provide a taxi service.

Speaking at Kulhudhuffushi, Haa Dhaalu Atoll’s largest populated island, this Monday, Ibu declared that he will put an end to the struggles of the taxi drivers by dissolving the taxi license fee.

The fee was implemented in the new procedure in 2016 by Maldives Transport Authority. Under the procedure, the licenses expire in five years, with MVR 5,000 as the renewal fee.

Ibu had previously declared that he would lower the annual fee of sea vessels, but President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has since exempted the annual fee and pardoned previous unpaid fees of sea vessels that are smaller than nine meters.
